For a HGV to get listed under Class 1 category, its total weight including payload should be between 39 tons and 60 tons. If the weight of a Class 1 truck or trailer exceeds 60 tons, extra licenses and transportation fees apply in the UK. Class 1 trailers and trucks are non-rigid and articulated.

Class 2 Trucks

If the HGV’s gross weight (Truck + Payload) is below 39 tons, it is classified as a class 2 HGV. Class 2 trucks are rigid and non-articulated.

Class 3 Trucks

Class 3 trucks are the most common types of commercial vehicles in the UK that can be driven with a regular driving licence. These trucks have a gross weight of 7.5 tons and include tipper, flatbed and dropside trucks.
