What Are Lithium Batteries And Their Applications?

Lithium batteries are the primary type of disposable batteries that use lithium compounds or lithium metals as anodes inside them. Lithium batteries can produce a voltage of 1. 5 to 3.7 volts depending upon their size and design. The most common applications of lithium batteries include electrically operated consumer products and electric portable devices. Lithium batteries can produce twice the voltage as compared to zinc-carbon or alkaline batteries.

Lithium battery refers to a class of chemical compounds which contains different electrolytes and cathodes. The energy produced by these batteries is usually consistent and long lasting depending upon the materials and chemical combinations used inside them. A common type of high energy lithium compounds is lithium-thionyl chloride. Lithium-thionyl chloride batteries contain SOCl2(thionyl chloride)  and lithium LiAlCl4 (tetrachloroaluminate). SOCL2 acts as a cathode and LiALCl4 acts as an electrolyte.

A porus carbon cathode collector collects electrons from the external circuit in a lithium battery. Lithium-thionyl battery is usually not intended for consumer products and used only for commercial purposes. These batteries are good for a low and constant supply of current over a long period of time. Wireless alarm systems can be a good example of lithium battery application.

A typical lithium battery consists of the following four layers

1st Layer:

Anode cup with partially treated lithium

2nd Layer:

Separator, a thin porous material layer soaked with a lithium salt and an organic solvent electrolyte

3rd Layer:

Manganese dioxide tablet cathode

4th Layer:

Cathode can, with electron collector carbon layer

Lithium batteries are used in critical applications and devices that require long lasting performance and durability. An example of such devices can be a pacemaker. A lithium battery in such a performance-critical device is made to last for 15 years or even more. The costs of materials used in such batteries hinder their production and distribution as a cost effective solution. However, these batteries are also used in watches, cameras, gaming devices and calculators.

Although lithium batteries are quite costly as compared to their alkaline counterparts yet they offer a long lasting solution where performance and durability is required. Lithium batteries produce higher voltages as compared to other types of batteries so care must be taken before placing these batteries in regular devices. Other examples of lithium battery applications include remote car locks, PDAs and computer backup devices etc.
